Young man killed

TIMARU, October 28. A young man was killed but others in a car escaped serious injury when it went through the guard rails of a culvert and into a creekbed at Otaio late on Saturday evening.
The man killed was Graeme John Carter, aged 18, an apprentice mechanic, of 37 Sefton Street, Timaru.
The other occupants of the car, all from Timaru, who were admitted to the Timaru Hospital, are Stephanie Jane Aitken, of 54 Le Cren Street; Massey Joseph Tiaika, aged 17, of 14 Royal Street; Kenneth John Lapthome, of 26 William Street; and Mervyn Howard Dore, of 9 James Street. Their condition
has been given as satisfactory. I Constable C. R. Brown, of St Andrews, said the vehicle 1 was travelling east on River : Road towards the junction [ with the No. 1 State high- . way at Otaio, two miles south ' of St Andrews. “There is a series of tight curves, and the car ran off to the left a short distance from the main highway and > travelled along a grass verge , until it hit the abutment of . the culvert,” Constable Brown said. . “Apparently the vehicle , turned over, snapped off a i guard rail, and plunged into . a water hole in an otherwise i dry creekbed,” he said. “The passengers were ; thrown on to the roadway before the car toppled over the bank,” he said. The vehicle was a “writeoff.”
