SEMINAR ON JAPAN

The spotlight will be on the Japanese market at a seminar at Lincoln College on November 16, and 17.

The seminar is entitled “Doing business in Japan,” and is being sponsored by the department of agricultural economics and marketing at the college and the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association.

A preliminary announcement about the seminar says that New Zealand’s export industries are continuing to grow in number and production capability, but transport costs to get goods from this

country to world markets continue to rise. If these two facts are taken alone, without considering complications such as the European Economic Community, there is sufficient incentive for looking at new and closer markets with growth potential. One such market is Japan, which now takes 10 per cent of New Zealand’s total exports. And Japan is at a stage where new national policies such as greater liberalisation of trade are being considered. RIGHT CLIMATE Consequently, the climate is right for increased efforts by New Zealand manufacturers and traders, but the

Japanese market is radically different from others, and its characteristics must be fully appreciated to market successfully there. Speakers at the seminar will include, for instance, a Japanese from the Japanese information and cultural centre in Wellington, and also experienced New Zealand businessmen already trading in Japan and university and Government staff from this country and overseas who have studied and worked in Japan. Already a wide range of people from many parts of the country, including bankers and businessmen, have enrolled for the seminar.

Registration forms may be obtained from the registrar at the college or Professor W. O. McCarthy, who is head of the agricultural economics and marketing department at the college.
