Firemen back on duties
Firemen in Christchurch have resumed drills and routine duties after a meeting yesterday morning. The firemen had stopped the routine duties after a stop-work meeting on Thursday. Firemen at Timaru, Auckland, and North Shore, who stopped routine work at the same time, have taken the same action as in Christchurch.
The union secretary (Mr G. G. Walker) will this afternoon meet a committee of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board to discuss the dispute. Mr Walker said he would later this week meet a mediator, Mr J. D. Gibb, in Wellington. The dispute had arisen because the firemen had been refused both a wage increase jand the recent 4.2 per cent wage order, one of which they had expected to get, Mr [Walker said.
