Collapse of bridge

(N.Z. Press Association)

BLENHEIM, Oct. 26.

Road access to Medway Valley, 15 miles up the Awatere Valley, has been cut by the partial collapse of the Medway Bridge across the Awatere River. Seven settlers and their families are affected, but foot access across the damaged bridge is still possible and residents have arranged a car shuttle service among themselves. A wooden beam at the southern end of the 45-year-old, 411 ft-long bridge collapsed under the weight of a steel beam which was being put in place by Awatere County Council staff during repair and maintenance work. This morning, the council’s consulting engineer (Mr C. C. Davidson) said that the bridge might collapse under its own weight.

A new bridge is being planned.
