Easier tone in Melbourne
Mining and industrial issues eased on the Melbourne Stock Exchange yesterday and with only a low turnover there was little to suggest inter-state interest. In the absence of buying support, leading mining stocks slipped back sharply in early trading, but this was offset to a degree during the mid-morning and afternoon.
Falls outnumbered rises 109 to 81, and 137 stocks were steady on Friday’s closing levels.
B.H. Sth rose from 200 c to finish at 245 c after the company reported a substantial loss for the latest year, but directors predicted future improvements. Poseidon fell to its lowest point this year of 950 c and
N.B.H.C. was down 17c at 297 c. Utah at 445 c, Great Boulder at 150 c and Queensland Mines at 235 c each lost 5c and Kathleen Investments rose 8c to 168 c. Adelaide Motors, which rejected the open-ended Merbank bid of 252c' a share, fell 13c to the offer price, while Merbank gained 10c to 185 c. MELBOURNE Sales.—Ampol, 78; Ansett, 100; Aust.
