Memorial service for fisherman

The ashes of Mr W. E. C. ("Stump”) Jones, one of Lyttelton’s best-known fishermen, were scattered yesterday morning from the tug Canterbury in the outer harbour by his brother, Mr D. B. Jones, of Lyttelton. Aboard the Canterbury, in addition to the tug’s complement, were 16 friends and relatives. Accompanying the Canterbury, the trawler Theseus carried Lyttelton fishermen, who placed a wreath in the water. Captain F. A. G. Dawson, master of the Canterbury, performed a brief marine memorial service, while both craft flew ensigns, at halfmast. "Stump” Jones was one of Lyttelton’s lovable and generous characters. Despite a physical handicap, he was fearless, independent and survived a number of maritime hazards in his craft. # * #

The Union Steam Ship Company’s 911-ton Holmdale, which is due at Lyttelton tomorrow from Fiji and Wellington, has only "one ton” of cargo aboard for local discharge. The nature of the cargo is unknown, but it is 1636 nautical miles from Suva to Lyttelton and this is a long way to haul one ton of cargo. A fortnight ago, the Holmdale left Lyttelton for Suva with a full cargo of Canterbury produce and general cargo. The Holmdale, which made a brief call at Wellington to remove some equipment, will load at Lyttelton for the Chathams. She will carry bulk diesel fuel in addition to other cargo, but according to the company, general cargo is coming forward very slowly at the moment, although this might change. The Suva-Lyttelton run Is not the only service that is almost one-way. Yesterday morning, Shaw Savill’s 11,232-ton refrigerated cargo liner Cedric, which shares the New Zealand-West Indies service with the same company’s Canopic, brought only 23 tons (canned fruit, liqueurs and spices) of cargo for local discharge. In fact she has only brought a little over 100 tons from the West Indies for al! New Zealand. The British Conference Lines have been pushing this trade to the benefit of New Zealand exporters for a number of years now. At Lyttelton, the Cedric will load more than 500 tons of carcase and cartoned meat for return and some milk powder. She will also discharge and load at Napier, Auckland and Whangarel. An earlier Cedric was a White Star Line, 21,000-ton, fourmasted, twin-funnelled passenger liner in the Atlantic ferry service. She was in service from 1903 to 1931. In January, 1918, the earlier Cedric which had engaged in troop-carrying, rammed the Canadian Pacific Line’s Montreal, which sank next day in the Irish Sea. # * #

The 845-ton Holmburn, now discharging railway lines, peanuts, telegraph poles and molasses from Queensland at Lyttelton, is the only New Zealandregistered vessel with passenger accommodation In the intercolonial service. (She carries 12). The Holmburn will sail for Wellington today to load stores and passengers for Campbell Island on a routine seasonal supply voyage. She will later visit Raoul Island. ♦ # * ARRIVALS Cedric (5.55 a m.), 11,232, Capt. C. Earl, Panama (S.S. and A.). Holmburn (6.1 a.m.), 845, Capt. H. C. F. Hunt, Raglan (U.S.S.).
