f,V.Z. Pre«» Attoclallon)
INVERCARGILL, Oct. 2.
Four hundred men employed in metal processing at the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter went on strike tonight because of the dismissal of seven fork-lift drivers.
The men—all members of the Engineers’ Union—decided to take the action aftei a meeting in Invercargill.
The fork-lift drivers complained about part-time lift drivers being paid higher rates for the same work, said Mr Hargreaves. When the casting shop developed a backlog of aluminium ingots waiting to be shifted to the warehouse, the management employed other fork-lift drivers to help, said Mr B. M. Hargreaves, secretary of the union.
These men were not as proficient as the regula: drivers, yet were being paid more, said Mr Hargreaves.
