Cathedral Square

Sir, —Fleming Ross Miller’s claim that the miserable plight of the young people who congregate in Cathedral Square is the fault of society is not true. These young people are in this situation because they are jobless and have nothing else to do. This is not the fault of society, but it is the result of the economic policy of our Government. These young people are the ones who have been affected. The Government’s educational policy could come under fire here, also, for these "drop-outs” are people who, after sitting on the edges of their school chairs for years, have gone into the world the day they reached 15, often nearly illiterate. The schools have made no attempt to help them, because they are “different.” They leave school, hoping to get jobs, but are unable to find any. The only alternative is to join the gang in the Square. —Yours, etc., “P. S. WAID.” September 30, 1972.
