Boys’ work praised
Officers of the Christchurch Drainage Board have commended the boys of St Bede’s College for their thoroughness in a recent clean-up at the board’s Aranui treatment station.
The board engaged senior boys on two afternoons to tidy up an area covered with scrub and rubbish and paid them $2BO for the work. The boys have since given the money plus an additional $873 to a charitable organisation in Wellington which provides a refuge for addicts and alcoholics.
The secretary of the board, Mr M. J. Home, said the boys had done difficult manual work during the last three years and had given their earnings to charity. The board had been very impressed with the unselfish attitude they had adopted. About 650 boys participated in ventures to provide money for the charity.
