The Lord Mayor of Adelaide (Mr W. H. Hayes) and his wife arrived in Christchurch yesterday, primarily to attend the opening of the Town Hall, but also to strengthen the sister-city relationship established between Adelaide and Christchurch—both “festival cities”—earlier this year.
Cr H. G. Hay, chairman of the Town Hall Committee and a leading figure in the arts festivals for Christchurch, visited Adelaide a few months ago and discussed the possibility of coordinating arrangements for Adelaide’s arts festival, which is a big Australian event, with Christchurch’s. Mr and Mrs Hayes will return home next Wednesday, and in the meantime will be given “royal” treatment, even to the extent of having their itinerary and programme, complete with routes to be taken from airport to hotel, hotel to Town Hall and other journeys, printed in booklet form simi--1 .r to that for Royal visits. Last evening they joined the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr N. G. Pickering) and Mrs Pickering at a dinner given by the United King-
dom High Commissioner (Sir Arthur Galsworthy). This morning the Adelaide visitors will have a jet boat trip up the Waimakariri River, and this evening will attend a cocktail party at the home of the Australian Government Trade Commissioner for the South Island (Mr A. R. Taysom), where the Australian High Commissioner (Dame Annabelle Rankin) will be a guest. Saturday will be taken up with the Town Hall opening, the civic welcome to the new Governor-General (Sir Denis Blundell) and the Town Hall’s inaugural concert. After a sight-seeing tour on Sunday Mr and Mrs Hayes will be back at the Town Hall for the opening night of “Henry V.” Monday will spent in Christchurch and on Tuesday they will go to Mount Cook with Mr and Mrs Pickering for lunch at the Hermitage.
