MAORI SAILS

The inter-island ferry Maori resumed its Lyttelton - Wellington service last night, after a day’s delay because of a dispute.

The Maori’s sailing on Wednesday was cancelled late in the evening because of the dispute, and she remained in Lyttelton all day yesterday. It is believed the dispute was over a crew shortage. Three engine-room ratings were flown to Christchurch from Auckland yesterday. No comment was forthcoming from the South Island assistant secretary of the Seamen’s Union (Mr T. Stuart), and the Christchurch manager of the Union Steam Ship Company (Mr L. M. Fairweather) had no comment beyond confirming that about 230 passengers had remained aboard overnight.

A few of the passengers left the Maori after spending the night aboard, and cancelled their passages, or took their cars and headed north to use the Cook Strait ferry service. Breakfast was provided by the ship’s cafeteria for the passengers who spent the night aboard. The Maori was well laden with both passengers and cargo when she sailed last night. Besides the passengers who remained from Wednesday, 400 were booked for last night’s passage. The ship carried about 98 cars and a full load of cargo.
