Gunsynd and Triton dominate Epsom

(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) SYDNEY. A field of 17, headed by the glamour gallopers, Gunsynd and Triton, will go to the post for the $50,000 Epsom Handicap (1600 metres) at Randwick tomorrow.

Between them, the two topweights represent a cash value of morfe than $500,000, with Triton under option to Japanese buyers for $250,000 and Gunsynd sold last week to a syndicate, which will stand him at stud n season, for more than $270,000. Gunsynd, trying to win the race for the second consecutive year will carry 62kg. (9-11), with Triton under the impost of 59.5 kg. (9-5). Both horses have drawn near the middle of the field, with Gunsynd at eight and Triton at 12.

Triton’s trainer, S. Brown, said yesterday he was quite happy with the draw and preferred the horse drawn out from the rail to avoid the early scramble for positions.

Queensland visitor Charlton Boy drew the ace, with Beaches, a Melbourne stablemate of A.J.C. Derby favourite, the New Zealander, Longfella, starting from four. The New Zealand horse, Turbino, drew handily at six.

Latest betting markets for the Epsom have Gunsynd the 3 to 1 favourite, with Triton on the second line at 11 to 2. .The Derby, also for a stake of $50,000. to be decided over 2400 metres, has attracted a field of 16, with Longfella drawing in the middle at eighth. The well-fancied I’m Scarlet, one of last season’s top two-year-olds, drew number one, while New Zealand-bred Gold Brick (Oncidium—Golden Goddess) is also close to the rails at two.

A feature of the Derby field is that no fillies made the final payment.

Latest betting markets have Longfella a warm 11 to 8 favourite, with Blue Sky on the next line at 5 to 1 and Gold Brick fractionally longer at 11 Fields:— 3 p.m.— A.J.C.
