Mural of ‘every colour'

“Almost every colour you could think of” was how the artist, Pat Hanly, described the mural for the Town Hall. Mr Hanly, who lives in Auckland, was commissioned by the Town Hall Committee to paint the mural. He produced a freeform design.

The mural 160 ft by Bft, runs on the four outside walls of the conference room and faces the refreshment bars and foyers on the mezzanine floor.

In June, 1971, when he was commissioned for the work, Mr Hanly said:

"The mural will be more decorative than a major work of art. Its main purpose is decoration. It will be ‘light’ rather than ‘high’ art.

“There will be no figurative work in the mur.al. It will be free form. I have seen the Town Hall twice recently, and have seen the drawings by Mr Warren, who invited me to submit an idea for the mural.

“I felt that the environment of the mural called for a splash of colour, and it is apparent that Mr Warren and the committee have agreed with that,” Mr Hanly said.

At a meeting of the City Council, Mr Hay said that the mural would be a “glorious splash of colour.”
