Fire services review urged
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Sept. 28. A suggestion that the retired chief inspector of fire services in Britain, Sir Henry Smith, should be invited to inspect New Zealand’s fire services, was made in Parliament today. Mr H. L. J. May (Lab., Western Hutt) said a review of fire services by an independent authority was urgently needed. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Highet) had agreed to give the proposal serious consideration.
Mr May’s Fire Services Amendment Bill vzas reported back to the House today with the recommendation from the Local Bills Committee that it should not proceed. The Government’s Fire Services Bill was also reported back and will proceed.
