Making do
Christchurch has used a half a dozen or more buildings to make do for civic functions since the first pair of “town” halls were relinquished in the early 1870 s.
Even while those two assembly rooms in High Street were in existence their inadequacy was indicated by the use of Tattersall’s, the old Drill Hall, the Provincial Council Chambers and even the Royal Hotel for functions more appropriate to the size and dignity of a proper Town Hall. In modern times, the King Edward Barracks has been used extensively, as has the Civic Theatre, Cowles Stadium (mainly for schools’ choirs), Canterbury Court, and even the Winter Garden (for civic banquets).
