(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, September 28.
Eight young persons from Dunedin were injured when the car in which they were travelling struck the St Kilda Surf LifeSaving Club’s building in the John Wilson Memorial Drive, Dunedin, at 11.38 last night.
Two girl passengers, Jackie Anne Stephens, aged 14, and Geraldine Mary Stephens, aged 16, were admitted to the Dunedin Hos-
pita], where their condition today was “quite satisfactory.”
The driver of the car, Kevin Stuart Nevard, 18, suffered minor injuries, as did five other passengers, Wayne John Coster, 16, James Smiler, 15, Wendy Green, 18, Dawn Carruth, 16, and Margaret Wieringa, 16. Another passenger, Brent Nevard, escaped injury. The surf club’s captain, Mr Russell Lawson, said today that the damage was estimated at $lOOO. The accident demolished a shower room and a first-aid room, and about half the building will have to be replaced because of cracking. The front of the car was extensively damaged. It is the third time the eight-year-old building has been struck by a vehicle. The building was also damaged by a storm recently which ripped out piping and shattered windows.
