TURNBERRY (Scotland). The 35-year-old Welsh golfer, B. Huggett, who last week withdrew from the Welsh World Cup squad on his doctor’s advice because of exhaustion, led the field after the first round of the £51,000 John Player tournament.

He shot a seven-under-par round of 64 for a course record on the recently lengthened Ailsa course.

Huggett led by one stroke from P. Townsend, of England. An American, W. Casper, was third on 67, followed by another Englishman, P. Oosterhuis, on 68, and a group on 69 which includes R. J. Charles, of New Zealand, and A. Jacklin, of England.

The favourite, G. Player, had a 70, but P. W. Thomson, who last week won the Wills tournament at Dalmahoy, had a disastrous nine-over-par round of 80.
