Safer dieseis
A safety device which effectively shuts down a diesel engine working in a volatile atmosphere has been introduced by the Enginering Services (Wilton), a subsidiary of Imperial Chemical Industries. Previously it was thought that because of the lack of an electrical ignition spark, diesels were safer to use in a flammable atmosphere, provided spark arrestors were fitted to engine exhausts. However, experience has shown that a diesel engine will continue to run if enveloped in a flammable
gas cloud, despite the fuel! supply being cut off, due to the gas acting as a fuel. The “Pyroban” device, fitted inside the vehicle’s air filter is operated by pressure from a standard carbon dioxide fire extinguisher activated by a plunger. The carbon dioxide released into the engine prevents air or lubricating oil from reaching the cylinder. A flame trap on the “Pyroban” is a standard fitting as an added precaution to prevent ignition through the air inlet.
