U.K. climber honoured
The English climber, Mr H. E. L. Porter, who led the party which made the first traverse of Mount Tasman (11,475 ft in the mid-19205, was on Wednesday evening made an honorary member of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club. Mr Porter, who came to New Zealand in the course of his employment as an engineer, made several creditable climbs in the Southern Alps at a time when the sport was in its early days in New Zealand. Engineer Col on Mount Tasman was named in recognition of Mr Porter’s achievements in the Southern Alps. He married Miss D. Baker, of Woodbury, and is now living in England.
