6A STREET APPEAL

$15,000 target tomorrow

Organisers of the 6A youth project hope to raise $15,000 in tomorrow’s street collection in Christchurch. The appeal organiser (Mr P. Rutledge) said yesterday that there had been a fantastic response from volunteers willing to collect for the appeal. The organisers intend to raise $50,000 to buy the old Nurse Maude headquarters in Madras Street and convert it into a youth centre which will provide accommodation, referral services, and elementary technical training. Circulars have been sent to hundreds of schools and organisations explaining the object of the appeal and seeking support. Transport has been arranged to take collectors to key areas from the street appeal base in the Civic Theatre. The Canterbury Regional Youth Council released a statement on Tuesday evening calling on the youth of the city to mobilise support for the project. For too long young people had allowed the burden of youth services to fall on the churches and adult community. The 6A appeal was a project in which youth could participate for youth, said the statement. The council is planning its own fund-raising schemes as well as assisting in the street appeal.
