Future of Orari
Members of the Racing Authority are expected to attend the second day of the Geraldine Racing Club’s spring meeting next month.
Orari’s future as a racing centre for the Geraldine galloping and trotting clubs is uncertain, and the Royal Commission of Inquiry considered that these, clubs should race at Washdyke. But many who were at the club s spring meeting on Monday, especially those who had come from the far south, felt the conditions at Orari were almost idyllic.
The Geraldine club certainlv presents a good racing surface for its spring meetings, and it is doubtful if anything comparable would be so consistently available at Washdyke. Ashburton would In many ways be preferable to Washdvke as racing headquarters for the Geraldine clubs, but as such there a new problem would be created.
The success of the latest Geraldine meeting last Mondav owed much to the fact that it was an anniversary day in South Canterbury.
The South Canterbury people rolled up in good numbers to one of their "local" meetings last week. It is doubtful if they would have travelled to Ashburton in such numbers.
