CHANGE URGED
Responsibility for Railways
(N Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 27. It seemed to have been accepted in principle that the Minister of Transport must be relieved of direct managerial responsibility for the Railways Department, said Mr N. J. Clarke, industry reoresentative on the Transport Advisory Council, in New Plymouth today. Addressing the Road Carriers’ Association annual conference, Mr Clarke said a deputation to the Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) and Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) had put the industry’s view on the dual responsibility of the Minister of Transport. "From recent information," he said, “it appears to have been accepted in principle that the Minister must be relieved of direct managerial responsibility for Railways, and I hope some positive steps will be taken after the General Election to make this possible.”
