Not too difficult

Many people will have nothing to do with wallpapering. They think it is too difficult. Wallpaper manufacturers do not agree. They have put out some simple instructions to encourage people to try the job. Here are the instructions: The paste should be brushed down the centre of the paper then brushed outwards to the edges. Paste the half further away from you and spread the paste evenly in sweeping diagonal strokes. Keep the paste from going underneath on to the patterned surface.

Use one of- the cellulose pastes, they do not stain so readily. It is a mistake to put the paper on the wall too soon after it has been pasted. With a very thin paper you can paste and hang one length at a time.

With a heavy paper you may have to wait some time, long enough to paste two or three more lengths before hanging the first. After pasting the first length take the two ends, and fold them back to the centre, pasted sides together.

Take care not to crease the paper at the fold. When you start hanging, open the top fold and tentatively bring the top of the paper to the wall, then work downwards. If necessary, slide into position with your hands. Smooth it down the centre with a sweep of the brush and stroke outwards left and right from the centre towards the outer edges, unfolding the lower half as soon as you are ready.
