Two policemen were wounded when they intervened in a tribal battle in the New Guinea highlands in which two persons were killed and 43 were injured, a police spokesman in Port Moresby reported today. The fight, involving 500 armed tribesmen of the Kimbaga and Dugumin clans, began late yesterday over a land dispute near Tambul, in the western highlands. A riot squad led by Inspector Watson Beaton was sent to the scene from Mount Hagen, and today there was an hour-long confrontation ibetween police and warriors during which Inspector Beaton and another policeman were slightly wounded. The police were between the warrior armies, which were firing arrows and throwing spears. Thirty men, including twe local government councillors, were arrested. The Port Moresby police spokesman said that it was believed the fighting would continue, and that a second riot squad might be sent. The battle was the latest in a series of tribal fights in the area.
