SITUATION AT 8 P.M. A ridge of high pressure lies over northern New Zealand and a cold front over the south-west of the South Island is moving farily rapidly north-east. FORECASTS: CANTERBURY.—A change to moderate or fresh south-westerlies this morning and a brief period of showers; colder after the wind change. MARLBOROUGH.—North-west winds, strong and gusty at times about Cook Strait, otherwise mainly moderate; cloudy periods about the Sounds, otherwise fine and mild; a south-west wind change is likely about noon bringing a few brief coastal showers. NELSON.—Moderate variable winds ; fine and mild. BULLER and NORTH WESTLAND— Light to moderate variable winds; mainly fine apart from cloud this morning; mild day temperatures. SOUTH WESTLAND.—CoId southwesterlies and showers this morning, but improving later in the day. OUTLOOK.—A few showers likely but long fine periods in most places.
