Traffic up, tolls down
Traffic through the Christ-church-Lyttelton road tunnel for the first 26 days of this month showed an increase but total tolls had a slight reduction, some of which might be accounted for by the temporary loss of the inter-island ferry service, the chairman (Mr V. G. Spiller) said at the authority’s meeting yesterday. Motor-car traffic increased by 14.7 per cent, but commercial traffic was down by 6.1 per cent. Car tolls increased by $339 and truck and heavy trailer traffic showed a decrease of $768. The over-all position was a reduction of $173. Soda ash (850 tons) and gypsum (2670 tons) were carried through the tunnel and bulk cartage of coke and wheat continued to the port. Last month the total tolls of $42,278 were $4OBO, or 10.7 per cent greater than for August of last year. They brought the total for the first five months of the financial year to $172,519, an increase of $20,498, or 13.5 per cent.
