Traffic control by TV
Sir,—On Monday, September 18, the Christchurch City Council approved “in principle” closed-circuit television in Cathedral Square for traffic control, and, among other things, for watching “special events such as processions.” In view of the fact that the police have on several occasions in the past taken photographs of people taking part in demonstrations or vigils in the Square, could we have public assurances from both the police and the City Council that the television will not be used for similar purposes, and in particular that it will not be used for taking photographs of unwilling or unknowing citizens? —Yours, etc., W. J. ROSENBERG. Sept. 20, 1972.
[The Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering) replies: “The closed-circuit television proposed for control of traffic will be used solely for this purpose.”]
