Lord Ballantrae to visit N.Z.
Lord Ballantrae of the Bay of Islands or, as he is more familiarly known to New Zealanders, Sir Bernard Fergusson, will return to the Dominion in February on a private visit. During a visit to New Zealand servicemen with the A.N.Z.U.K. Force in Singapore during a recent SouthEast Asian tour the former Governor-General indicated that he was “just counting the days.” Asked if he missed the Dominion, he replied: “Miss it? I can’t get it out of my system.” As Colonel of the Black Watch Regiment he was on his way to Hong Kong to review his troops but for two days last week he moved among New Zealand servicemen with his characteristic informality. Lord Ballantrae toured the frigate Waikato now serving on the Far East Station, inspected the R.N.Z.A.F.’s 41 Squadron based at Tengah, and finally donned old clothing for a day in the Malaysian jungle with the Ist Battalion, Roval New Zealand Infantry Regiment. Lord Ballantrae took a keen interest in New Zealand’s contribution to the A.N.Z.U.K. Force.
