Girls' soccer at Lyttelton
An all-girls’ soccer team which was recently founded at Lyttelton has 12 players at present, ranging from 15 to 19 years of age. They have called themselves the “Lyttelton Spurs” and have to date met with some success. The girls, all Lyttelton residents, practise on Sunday mornings and again on Wednesday evenings under lights, at the Lyttelton Recreation Ground. They are smartly turned out in maroon shirts with large gold numbers on the back, except for the goalie who wears a white T shirt with a maroon number. They have white shorts and maroon and gold socks. Musters are well attended and they are as keen as mustard. The idea of a soccer team sprang from the girls themselves and they have been fortunate in finding someone who was prepared to help them in their aims. He is a 24-year-old Lyttelton man, Mr Graham George Dale, who is secretary of the Lyttelton Rugby Club. In addition to coaching at Rugby, he now coaches the girls as well. Mr Dale played soccer at Christchurch West High School. The girls say that it is a splendid thing to have a team from Lyttelton, otherwise they would have to go to the city to join a city team. Most of their matches will be played in the city however. Mr Dale says that
the team is going very well and improving all the time. He said that the Lyttelton Rugby Club is giving the girls full moral and financial support.
