Woman 100
(N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, Sept. 26. Mrs Ranginui Parewahawaha Leonard, of Waiteti, recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, she enjoyed a quiet family gathering at home. The only child from a family with a history of only children, Mrs Leonard married Mr F. H. Leonard in 1894. The marriage was arranged, and proved to be “a very successful one.” Mrs Leonard had 10 children, eight of whom are still living, and has more than 200 grandchildren. Mrs Leonard is still able to enjoy life. Her eyesight and hearing are as keen as ever, and she uses neither hearing aid nor spectacles. A veteran smoker, she still “rolls her own.” Smoking is a habit which started when she was about seven years old. In those days she smoked a pipe, but today “cigarettes are more with it.”
