Flats at college

The present level of government subsidies for residential accommodation for university students would force all universities into building flat or motel type accommodation, the principal of Lincoln College (Sir Malcolm Burns) said yesterday. Sir Malcolm Bums told a meeting of the Lincoln College Council that the sheer costs of building hostel accommodation made flat or unit types the only viable alternative.

The council has approved a scheme eventually to build eight flats at the college at an estimated cost of $6500 a unit.

This will provide residential accommodation for post-graduate students, teaching fellows, and visiting academic staff as well as married Ph.D. students. The cost of such accommodation is considerably less a bed than the present cost of hostel accommodation. The flats, to be known as the Sims Flats, will be sited on the south side of Ellesmere Junction Road.
