Colours cause concern
“The Press’* Special Service AUCKLAND. The North Island branch of the Horsemen and Trainers’ Association wants its parent body to make urgent representations to the Trotting Conference concerning colours worn in races. “We do not wish to see owners stampeded into registering colours to overcome the problem brought about by the removal of stable brackets, without consideration of alternatives,” said the secretary. Mr J. C. Lucas. In the long term, the association favoured the registration of colours for every licensed driver. In the meantime, however, it sought the retention of the present method, with the proviso that where a trainer had multiple entries for a race, sets of colours to be provided by the club would be worn. “Probably about six different sets of colours reserved by the conference for the use of clubs would be sufficient,” said Mr Lucas. “We feel this system could be used until a definite scheme for the use of drivers’ colours would be finalised.” He said the association foresaw the need for declaration of drivers at acceptance time and their publication in the racebook. In most cases, he said, the driver was decided well before raceday. “Any changes at the meeting,” he said, “could easily be made known to the public.”
Drivers colours are used in the United States.
