Search planned
Dunedin police are planning an air search to begin at first light this morning for four young climbers who have failed to keep scheduled radio links with Christchurch. The four, all members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, have not been heard from since Monday. At that time they were at the Mount French Hut in the Mount Aspiring area and said that the weather was bad. They had climbed Mount French that day and were planning a climb on Mount Avalanche for Tuesday. The climbers were keeping in touch by portable radio with the Canterbury Mountain Radio Service monitored in Christchurch by Mr C. H. Turner. They were supposed to report at 6.45 p.m. each day. Three of the climbers are: Bryan Carter, aged 16, a pupil at Christchurch Boys’ High School, of 92A Memorial Avenpe, Fendalton; Wilfrid Louis Lamerink, aged 18, a student at Canterbury University, of 55 Kirkwood Avenue, Ham; and Robin Andrew Smith, aged 17, a furniture maker, of 12 Devonport Lane, St Albans. The fourth climber’s name has not been released.
