‘House not party platform’
The Speaker of the House of Representatives
(Mr A. E. Allen) is clamping down on “blatant electioneering”' speeches in Parliament, says a Press Association report. He warned both sides yesterday that as long as he was Speaker he would not tolerate the House being turned into a party political platform.
He made the remarks when the Opposition debated at length the introduction of a local bill empowering the Gisborne Harbour Board to levy a special rate for a $45,000 loan. Mr Allen said that Parliament's time, which was paid for by the taxpayer, should not be used for blatant electioneering.
He pulled up speakers on both sides including the Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) and the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk).
