Electrodes filed
Electrodes should be filed when a used sparkplug is cleaned and gapped before being reinstalled in an engine, spark-plug engineers say. If the electrodes are not filed, the plugs may actually be worse than before they were “cleaned,” the experts say. Tests were conducted recently by the Champion company in which plugs which had been cleaned,
Production record Ford of Britain’s vehicle production in the first six months of this year set a new record by reaching a total of 366,093 units. The company also reports an upsurge in station-waggon production. Ford record British sales of Ford cars in May set a new monthly record, the company has announced. Altogether, 42,331 Fords were sold, more than 2000 better than the previous record, set in February, 1968. The Escort and Cortina led the sales, although the new Granada and Consul V 6 cars are now being produced at the rate of 1000 a week.
gapped and filed were compared for voltage requirements with similar plugs which had been only cleaned and gapped. The plugs which had been merely cleaned and gapped were found to require more voltage than they had done before they were removed from the engine. The other plugs, however, gave a performance which was comparable to that of new plugs. The electrodes of a sparkplug must present sharp, clean edges if they are to perform their best, the experts say. Sparks always jump from a sharp edge rather than a rounded surface.
