2-WEEK PENALTY
Table tennis player
H. H. Redmond, the seventhranked Canterbury junior, was suspended for two weeks from Interclub competition when he appeared before the Canterbury Table Tennis Association's executive last evening.
Redmond was charged with striking an opponent, G Adamson. after an under 16 doubles match at the North Otago championships last week-end.
During the match, Adamson made remarks which annoyed him; he kept saying “Good shot.” when scoring points through edges, Redmond told the executive.
After the match, which he and his partner lost, Redmond said he shook hands, but was still angry'.
“Later. I was talking to another player when Adamson walked behind me, laughing, and said they had beaten us, ‘No sweat.’ I turned around and threw a punch.
“I apologised to him later and we agreed that both of us were at fault and decided to forget it.” he said.
As a result of the blow. Adamson suffered a bleeding nose.
Adamson said that his remarks of good shot to edge balls were not intended to upset his opponents. He agreed that Redmond had apologised later. The association president <M»’ A. B McCallum), said that it was distressing the amount of trouble caused by juniors this year.
“Far too many of them are goadin geach other with sly remarks which can be provocative,” he said.
“By bringing these players before the committee and penalising them accordingly, we hope to gain their respect and get them to play the game like true sportsmen,” he added. Some members of the executive were in favour of a more severe penalty, but the motion suspending him for two weeks was carried. Clubs will be notified that any future offence of this nature would be treated much more harshly.
