Tennis change to Sundays defeated
A proposal that the senior men’s grade competition be switched from Saturday to Sunday afternoons this season was not supported at the annual meeting last evening of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association.
The matter was raised by the competitions committee. A member of it, Mr T. Ralfe, said that because there would be three fewer courts available at Wilding Park next summer than last season, there might be some difficulty accommodating all teams on Saturday afternoons.
The difficulty would be overcome if the senior men’s grade was changed to Sunday.
However, speakers opposed the change on the grounds that the senior grade should take pride of place and remain on Saturdays; the publicity value to the sport of having it played on that day; and the possible disruptions to family life for the players if a change was made. On a show of hands, the proposal did not get one vote. Levy raised. — The meeting agreed to a 10c Increase in levies for town seniors end mid-week women.
