Appointment as principal
Mr B. A. Heney, deputyprincipal of Burnside High School for the last six years, has been appointed principal of a new secondary school which will open in Whakatane next February.
Bom and educated in Christchurch, Mr Heney also studied at the University ,of Otago and graduated from the University of Canterbury with bachelors’ degrees in arts and science. He served overseas with the Royal New Zealand Navy during World War II and later taught at Otago Boys High School, Motueka District High School, and Papanui High School before becoming one of the 12 teachers at Burnside High School when it opened with 250 pupils in 1960. Since then the school has grown to cater for 1530 pupils with a staff of 80. Mr Heney, a married man with five children, will remain at Bumside High School until the end of this year.
