Assurance on Lake Wanaka rejected
(V z Press .Association) INVERCARGILL, July 21. j Assurances by the Minister of Electricity (Mr Gandar), that the Government had at no stage considered raising Lake Wanaka have failed to reassure the Hands Off Wanaka Lake organisation. The organisation's president (Mr J. R. Scurr) said yesterday: “This is just a bit of eye-wash.” His organisation was well | ■ware that the Government had always said it proposed
to hold the lake’s level at its 'natural one, 914 ft. “But we want no interference at all,” Mr Scurr said. “We got a profound shock when we learned they had a plan in mind for a dam which could hold the level at 924 ft, with a crest of 930 ft. The Minister’s statement was “the same old story,” Mr Scurr said. “They say I they’re not going to interfere with the natural levels. Well, if they’re not going to interfere with the natural levels, whv build a control dam at all?”
