The West German Leader of the Opposition (Dr Rainer Barzel) today began two days of intensive talks with British Government and Opposition leaders on Common Mar-

ket developments, European security problems, and EastWest relations.

He began his round of factfinding discussions with an early call on Mr Geoffrey Rippon, Britain's chief Common Market entry negotiator, and had talks later with the Secretary of State for Defence (Lord Carrington), to discuss N.A.T.O. matters.

Later today he is due to meet the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Harold Wilson}— who has said that a Labour government would want to renegotiate some of the terms for British entry into the Common Market—and the Prime Minister (Mr Heath). Dr Barrel's London visit comes at a time when he is reported to think that his Christian Democratic Party’s chances of winning the West German elections in about five months time have improved recently.
