Gay Wanderer has third success

(From Our Own Reporter) TRENTHAM. Mr J. C. Pollock, who will represent thoroughbred breeding interests on the Racing Authority, had a winning experience as an owner when Gay Wanderer beat the other two-year-olds in the Juvenile Handicap at Trentham yesterday. Mr Pollock races the strong Monitor colt in partnership with Mr I. Robinson, of Matangi, on lease from Mr E. L. Healy, of Wanganui. This was Gay Wanderer’s third win for the partnership and it seems as though this youngster might become Mr Pollock's best performer for some years. His dam, Foxbay, was a classic winner in the Pollock colours some 20 years ago. Gay Wanderer made ground late for fifth on the first day of the meeting when ridden by N. Eastwood. J. Grylls, who had the mount yesterday, managed to have the colt closer to the leading line going to the final furlong and their chaUenge proved irresistible for Dymytryx, which had mastered the top-weight and favourite, Esculna, near the furlong. Nabua and Brogue both outfinished Escuina, which tired badly down on the inside and finished fifth.

Student Prince showed the ability of most of the stock of Red Jester in bad ground when he outclassed the other hack hurdlers in the Corunna Hurdles.

This eight-year-old from Gisborne appeared to find one more gear than the others on a track that had taken a soaking since the week-end, leading for the last nine furlongs to win by 12 lengths from My Companion, which was unchallenged for second. This was Student Prince’s third win for the season. Earlier victories, both over hurdles, were at Rotorua and Gisborne.

My Companion, a half-brother by Empire Way to Jury, a two-year-old in J. C. Tomkinson’s Riccarton team, ran the race out like a fair stayer, but like the others he could not find the winner’s pace and dash under testing conditions. The favourite, Even terms, looked a hopeless chance half a mile out and finished a well beaten ninth. Surprisingly. Gold Bar was the

only casualty. He jumped the second flight badly, the third flight worse and that was the end of him. Golden Jester was pulled up when tailed off.
