The photograph shows the match positions at the adjournment. Spassky, playing white, is left. Spassky, to move, has his King at KR4 and King’s pawn on K 3, supported by a Bishop on the black diagonal, and is attacking a black pawn on KB4. His remaining two pawns, on the Queen’s side, are blocked. Fischer’s King, at K 5, is supporting the forward pawn on the Bishop’s file, with two open pawns on the King’s Knight and King files.
