$130,000 to museum

The 100th anniversary wing appeal for extensions to the Canterbury Museum passed half-way last evening with the announcement that $130,000 had been subscribed. The appeal for $250,000 to add 24,000 sq. ft of exhibition space, office accommodation and a planetarium to the museum opened in April. More than $25,000 had already been given. Speakers at a social function at the museum last evening emphasised that professional appeal organisers had told the museum appeal groups that they would be lucky to raise $60,000. “We have surpassed this figure by far and have confounded the experts,” said Mr P. Gumsey, chairman of the appeal’s regional gifts committee.

The chairman of the appeal committee (Mr P. J. Skellerup), and the chairman of the Museum Trust Board (Mr C. E. Fenwick) said that the people of Christchurch and Canterbury were realising the asset they had in the museum.

Mr Gumsey said that the final figure could be reached by the end of this year, giving a chance for the Museum Trust Board to begin a project which with its Antarctic section would be notable in the world.
