Rail dispute delays ships
The banning of night work on trains to Lyttelton is having an effect on cargo handling at the port. Unfavourable weather also contributed to delays experienced by most ships in port yesterday. Ships loading refrigerated cargoes for overseas were particularly affected.
The secretary of the Lyttelton branch of the National Union of Railwaymen (Mr H. L. Straker) said that he had no comment to make, except that railwayment are doing their best to keep things maving. They did not want to inconvenience the public during the present stalemate, he said.
