Pay offer to seamen

(N.Z.P.A.‘Reuter—Copyright) TOKYO, July 12. The executive committee of the Japan Seamen’s Union today accepted, provisionally, an increased pay offer to end its three-month-old strike. The Government made 'he compromise proposal at a meeting last night with union officials and management representatives.

The management agreed to the offer immediately, but the union leaders of 160,000 seamen said that a final decision would be made al an enlarged meeting of their executive committee.

The strike has tied up more than 1200 vessels in 57 ports, representing 70 per cent of Japan’s merchant fleet. The Ministry of Transport estimates that the strike has held up 2.3 million tons of goods, including steel, coal, and cars, and shipping circles says that it has cost shipowners nearly 50,000 million yen (sl34m). The compromise wage offer is for an increase of 13,800 ven ($3l) a month.
