Checks on bread
Inspectors from the Weights and Measures Division of the Labour Department are likely to make spot checks to detect bread vendors cutting loaves in half. Many Christchurch private vendors are reported to be cutting loaves in their trucks at night to continue supplying customers with their quarter-loaf order. Grocers and dairies are refusing to cut loaves after warnings from the Health Department and the Weights and Measures Division.
Bakers who provide their own deliveries and are restricted to wrapped and labelled loaves if 12oz loaves are ordered are unhappy about the private vendors’ bid to beat the bakers’ split-loaf ban.
