Mafia inquiry in Australia

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

CANBERRA, July 12.

Mafia gangster activities in Australia were under investigation by the Commonwealth Police, the Deputy Commissioner (Mr L. Harper) said today.

Mr Harper told reporters that there was evidence of Mafia money coming to Australia for investment, and of Mafia-style activities in poker machine gambling and prostitution in New South Wales. Mr Harper’s comment came after newspaper reports that Sydney detectives were investigating Mafia - inspired gambling machine rackets in New South Wales clubs. The reports said that Americans with known Mafia connections were believed to be behind incidents of bribery and stand-over threats in New South Wales licensed clubs.

A member of the Austra-! lian Senate select committee on foreign ownership, Senator C. P. Maunsell, said today that the Mafia had tried to! take over an Australia-wide company recently. “The company was not taken over but only just' staved off the bid,” Senator Maunsell said. Senator Maunsell said that he did not think anything could be done to stop take-over bids by Mafia-type organisations. The area for main concern,i he said, was merchant banks, which could get money from anywhere.
