Kennedy going to convention

(N.Z.P A.-Reuter—Copyright)

MIAMI BEACH, July 12.

Senator Edward Kennedy, reported to be the first Vice-Presidential choice of Senator George McGovern, is flying to the Democratic convention city of Miami Beach tomorrow, a McGovern aide said last night.

Thursday is the day the convention selects a vicepresidential contender, but Senator Kennedy said earlier he would fly to give a speech appealing for party unity if the party’s presidential nominee—all but certain to be Senator McGovern —wanted him to. The McGovern aide, Mr Pierre Salinger, press secretary to the late President John Kennedy, said: “Senator Kennedy is flying here on Thursday; that is my understanding.” Senator Kennedy, aged 40, the only survivor of the Kennedy brothers, has said that he can see no circumstances under which he would be willing to accept national office this year.

He has been sitting out the convention in his Cape Cod summer home although his wife. Joan, has been at the party conference. He went fishing with his children. Senator Kennedy has strong support among Roman Catholic, labour and black voters and would considerably enhance Senator McGovern’s chances of winning the presidency. Senator McGovern said last Sunday that Senator Kennedy would be one of the first three people to whom he would offer the vice-presi-dency if he won the nomination. But political observers said Senator McGovern had made clear in private that Senator Kennedy was first choice. Senator Abraham Ribicoff of Connecticut. Senator McGovern’s convention floor manager, also said that Senator Kennedy was first choice. Senator Edmund Muskie, who announced today he was withdrawing as a presidential contender, was second choice, Senator Ribicoff added. <">ne of Senator Kennedy’s • ies. who is attending the vention as an observer, d that Senator Kennedy i not intend to appear at • ■> convention until after the "e-presidential candidate - selected.
