Clergyman’s strong Lyttelton links

An Anglican priest, the Rev. P. A. Shields, of Hornby, has strong links with Lyttelton and the sea. This 50-year-old man, who was born in Kenya and is married, with two married daughters, was employed by the New Zealand Stevedoring and Wharfingering Company, Ltd, at Lyttelton, before he entered the ministry only two years ago. Mr Shields began his seafaring career as a cadet in the British India Steam Navigation Company and ultimately obtained his master’s certificate. He also served in the Royal Navy. Still continuing his seafaring role, he later jointed the Hydrographic Survey Department, in Nigeria. The seafaring background and knowledge of Mr Shields is not being wasted, for later this year, he said, he will go to the British Solomons to be a chaplain in the diocese of Melanesia. He will not only continue his religious duties there, but will lend valuable maritime experience to this vast mission area which maintains its own sea-going craft. Mr Shields will not be the first seafaring man to work in the Melanesian ministry. The late Rt Rev. A. T. Hill, who was Bishop of Melanesia, was also a qualified master mariner who served for a number of years with the Lamport and Holt Line, trading between Britain and South America. The Northern Steam Ship Com. pany’s 1589-ton Dido, which completed loading bulk wheat for Auckland at the Lyttelton silo on Monday afternoon, is still delayed by crew shortage. She requires two seamen but althouh there were men available at Lyttelton yesterday, none offered themselves for the Dido. A further attempt to obtain two replacements would be made today, the owners said Ships of the British India Steam Navigation Company, which is based in Asia, employ Christians, Moslems, Hindus and Buddhists. Among those to give loyal service to the huge company is Mr Jack Santana Fcrrao. of the company’s Teesta, which is visiting Lyttelton. Aboard the Teesta at Cashin Quay yesterday, Mr Ferrao said that he had served 32 years with the company. A Goanese, formerly a Portuguese subject, but now Indian, he is a Christian, hence his Portuguese name. Mr Ferrao started as a steward in the company’s service, in 1940. aboard the company’s Amra, engaged in the Calcutta-Rangoon fast mail service. Many Asians had served much longer in the company than he had, he said, and all had the greatest respect and even affection for the company. Today, Mr Ferrao is the purser and catering officer aboard the Teesta. * * * There was a shortage of 13 gangs (250 men) on the Lyttelton waterfront when work began at 7 a.m. yesterday. The Straat Lagos, Haparangi, Canterbury Star, Springbank, and Katea were short manned. -iARRIVALS Rangatira (6.46 a.m.), 9387, Capt. J. D. Cleaver. Wellington (U.S.S.).
