Mountain Lion likely to boost jockey’s record

Three years ago, the famous grey, Kumai, gave the Wingatui jockey, B. P. Kennedy, the easiest of rides in winning the Wellington Club’s Matai Steeplechase.

Kennedy had no mount in the race two years ago, but triumphed in a dual role, as trainer and jockey, with the veteran, Cassbridge, in last year’s Matai Steeplechase.

In Mountain Lion, Kennedy has an outstanding chance of winning the Matai for a third time on the second day of the Wellington winter meeting today. Like Kumai and Cassbridge, Mountain Lion will attempt the Maui Steeplechase after contesting the Wellington Steeplechase—and he has the most encouraging credentials of the trio. Kumai did not finish the course in the 1969 Wellington Steeplechase. Cassbridge ran fourth last year. Of those which raced in the Wellington Steeplechase last week. Mountain Lion looked the most likely to improve with the race. He paraded carrying a lot of condition, and yet he faded from a contending position only inside the last two furlongs. Clearly, he would have been a more formidable rival for Bright Blue with one more race in his lead-up programme. But with the Matai Steeplechase today, and the Riddiford Steeplechase on Saturday, Mr and Mrs A. J. Brown’s six-year-old sUnds a good chance of coming out of the meeting a good winner. Terrestial, second in the Wellington Steeplechase, might be sent out favourite for today’s race. He showed he had plenty of stamina in getting within a length of Bright Blue in the Wellington Steeplechase, and if that race has not left its mark he should be one of the top contenders. Corunna Hurdles Willted was scratched from the Corunna Hurdles yesterday, leaving Even Terms in a good position to win his second race for the meeting and his fourth race “on the trot” The Corunna Hurdles is one of the quinella races on today’s programme, and if first-day form is of any value the odds on this event will not be attractive. Escuina, top weight in the Juvenile Handicap, will be another popular “anchor” selection with quinella devotees after a game second last Saturday. Escuina is a consistent chestnut filly by Chief Escort, sire also of Escameno, one of the fancies for the Parliamentary Handicap today. The Parliamentary Handicap will be the first leg of today’s T.A.B. double, and looks wide open. Besides Escameno, Ballycastle, Black Charm. Nipawin, and Origin will come in for heavy backing.

The second leg, the Memhers’ Handicap, will bring Cambridge Fair and Elkiro together for the first time at the meeting. Opinions will probably be evenly divided about the merits of these two mudlarks.
